What Weakens a Team? Lessons That Have Shaped Me
My paper identified several threats to team health, and through ministry experience Iβve seen each one firsthand.
1. Lack of Role Clarity
Unclear expectations breed frustration. I have learned that every team member must understand:
- What their role is
- Why it matters
- How it supports the mission
Leaders are responsible for alignment. When teams know the βwhy,β they work with passion.
2. Unclear Purpose
Teams lose energy when they lose focus. Iβve seen ministries attempt too many good things and struggle to accomplish the essential thing.
A unified mission clarifies decisions, fuels commitment, and creates organizational synergy.
3. Failure to Leverage Diversity
Paul reminds us: one body, many members, diverse gifts (Eph. 4; 1 Cor. 12).
Healthy teams embrace:
- Varied gifts
- Varied personalities
- Varied perspectives
Diversity prevents groupthink and drives creativity. Iβve learned never to build a team of βyes-men.β Ministry is richer when different voices sharpen one another.
4. Controlling Rather Than Inspiring
When leaders default to control, trust evaporates.
When leaders inspire, creativity ignites.
I have learned that my role is not to micromanage but to:
- shape culture
- cast compelling vision
- foster trust
- encourage honest dialogue
- build a climate where people flourish
The relational climate of the team matters as much as the skill set.
