A Doctrine & Theology Reflection | The Way Bible Series
The Call to Be Born of Water and Spirit
Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:1–8, NASB) lies at the heart of the Christian doctrine of baptism. In this passage, Jesus declares that entrance into the Kingdom requires birth “of water and Spirit.” This twofold birth establishes both the external sign of obedience and the internal transformation of regeneration. To be ‘born again’ is to participate in the divine life, to enter “The Way” — not merely through belief but through obedient participation in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
Biblical Foundations of Baptism
Baptism’s imagery stretches back to the Old Testament. The flood in Noah’s day and Israel’s crossing of the Red Sea prefigure salvation through water (1 Peter 3:20–21). Jesus’ own baptism in the Jordan revealed divine affirmation and the descent of the Spirit — a pattern for every believer’s initiation into the life of God. John Piper describes baptism as “an outward expression of an inward reality, but never optional for those who belong to Christ.” Through it, the believer publicly confesses faith and enters the covenant community.
