From these lives, we can define calling clearly:
Calling is God’s initiative in summoning a person into responsibility, sustained through obedience and confirmed through formation over time.
This means calling is not proven by confidence, visibility, or opportunity. It is discerned through:
• A growing inner conviction
• Alignment with Scripture
• Confirmation through community
• Faithfulness in present responsibilities
Calling often arrives before clarity. Abraham is told to go, but not where (Gen. 12:1). Jeremiah is called before he feels ready (Jer. 1:6–7). Moses is sent despite resistance. In each case, obedience precedes explanation.
This reframes leadership entirely.
Leadership is not about stepping into position.
It is about responding to God.
And the most important question is not,
“Am I called?”
but rather,
“Am I faithfully responding to the One who calls?”
