Strategies for Change
1. Strength-Based Approach:
Recognize and celebrate each child’s strengths. Nelson shines with a basketball — so let him. Inclusive sports programs, lunchtime clubs, or mentorships can restore confidence and belonging.
2. Peer Support Networks:
Small groups or mentorship circles help isolated students form safe friendships. Every child needs someone to say, “You matter.”
3. Training for Teachers and Coaches:
Equip staff to spot emotional distress early. Teasing, exclusion, and group dominance can be redirected through restorative classroom practices.
4. Family-School Connection:
Nelson’s mother works long hours, but schools can bridge that gap with updates, encouragement, and communication that makes home feel connected to school life.
5. Activate Counselling Referrals:
Where no in-house counsellor exists, teachers can refer students to Student Counselling Services. Even one supportive adult can change the outcome.
