III. Verse-by-Verse Breakdown — 1 Timothy 3:1–13
Verses 1–2 — The Calling and Character of an Overseer
Paul emphasizes that leadership is a calling, not a career. The overseer must be above reproach, faithful in marriage, and self-controlled.
Verse 3 — Conduct and Discipline
Leaders must not be addicted to wine or violent. Gentleness is strength under control. They must avoid greed and approach others with peace.
Verses 4–5 — Leadership Proven at Home
Family leadership reflects spiritual leadership. Managing the household well demonstrates readiness to care for God’s church.
Verse 6 — Spiritual Maturity
A leader should not be a recent convert, lest pride lead to downfall. Experience and humility are essential.
Verse 7 — Public Reputation
A good reputation with outsiders builds credibility and protects against scandal.
Verses 8–10 — The Character of Deacons
Deacons must be dignified, honest, temperate, and content. Their service must be tested and proven before appointment.
Verses 11–13 — Women and Families in Service
Women involved in ministry must be respectable, faithful, and self-controlled. Those who serve well gain respect and confidence in their faith.
