Practical Steps for Schools
1. Build Connection Before Correction — Talk to students like Nelson. Ask about their interests, not just their grades.
2. Make Inclusion Visible — Create opportunities for all students — not only the most athletic.
3. Train Teachers to Notice — Small jokes can wound deeply. Staff development on emotional safety and peer culture should be as important as academic training.
4. Link Home and School — Parents who work long shifts, like Nelson’s mother, may be loving but unavailable. Schools can bridge that gap with short notes or weekend check-ins.
5. Activate Counselling Networks — If your school lacks a counsellor, connect with Student Counselling Services through the Ministry of Education. Collaborate with outside resources as is nececessary. Even limited interventions make a measurable difference.
Faith Reflection — The Way Forward
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
Nelson’s story reminds us that strength isn’t always on display. Some of the bravest students are the quiet ones carrying invisible burdens.
In The Way, we walk with them — not to fix them, but to remind them of their God-given worth. Our job as teachers, parents, and community mentors is to build spaces where every student, no matter how overlooked, can find belonging.
🕊️ Walking The Way means creating classrooms of compassion — where laughter heals, not hurts, and where every Nelson knows he matters.
