Amalek and the Sin of Incomplete Obedience
The command concerning Amalek (1 Samuel 15) was not impulsive or cruel. Amalek represented generational violence—an enemy who attacked the weak and weary, who opposed God’s redemptive purposes from the days of the Exodus onward. This was unfinished business.
Saul won the battle.
But he spared the king—Agag.
He kept the best livestock.
He preserved what looked valuable and destroyed what seemed worthless.
It is easy to destroy what costs us nothing.
When confronted, Saul did not repent. He explained. He blamed the people. He spiritualized his choices. He even asked Samuel to honor him publicly.
Saul wanted forgiveness without surrender.
