The Call to Conscience
As one food bank director in Washington put it, “We shouldn’t need to feed the people who feed the nation.”
Yet here we are—neighbors keeping neighbors afloat while the political class negotiates over principles that rarely feed anyone.
Until America reforms how it funds itself—perhaps through automatic continuing resolutions or depoliticized budget rules—shutdowns will remain an embarrassing export of democracy.
And Maria, like thousands of others, will keep counting the days—and the dollars—until government opens its doors again.
