The Role of Fallen Angels in Human Suffering
Fallen angels — or demons — are spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). They oppose righteousness, stir temptation, and exploit human weakness. Yet, they are not responsible for all suffering; much pain arises from human sin and a fallen world. Cottrell notes: ‘Demons magnify what already exists in the sinful heart; they do not invent new evil.’
The Demons in the Ministry of Jesus
The Gospels reveal Jesus’ authority over demonic powers. ‘And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed.’ (Luke 11:14 NASB). In Luke 8, the demons begged not to be sent into the abyss — proof of His supreme authority.
