Egypt and the Blood: Shadows of Salvation
Before Sinai came the blood. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” (Exodus 12:13, NASB). Deliverance from Egypt foreshadowed salvation through Christ’s blood. Just as Israel passed through the waters of the Red Sea, believers pass through the waters of baptism — leaving behind slavery to sin and entering new life. Cottrell connects these moments: “Israel’s exodus was a type of Christian baptism — both signify deliverance from bondage through divine intervention.”
Baptism and Salvation
Can baptism save? Peter writes: “Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 3:21, NASB). The water itself does not save, but the faith response it represents unites us with Christ’s death and resurrection (Romans 6:4). Baptism is not magic — it is covenant participation. The Spirit is the agent; water is the sign.
Toward the New Testament Church
Pentecost sealed what Sinai began. The fire that once hovered over the tabernacle now rested upon the people of God (Acts 2). No longer would worship require a tent or priesthood; the Spirit became God’s indwelling presence in believers. “Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16, NASB). The Church became the living tabernacle, and baptism the sign of entry — marking believers as the new holy nation (1 Peter 2:9).
Reflection
From Eden’s fall to Calvary’s cross, the story has always been one of God pursuing fellowship. He called a nation, built a tabernacle, and gave His Spirit — all to make a way for humanity to live again in His presence. Baptism and Spirit-life are not rituals or emotions; they are evidence that the God who once said “When I see the blood, I will pass over you,” still saves by grace through faith today.
