    The Angel Before the Fall

Before there was sin on earth, there was rebellion in heaven. Scripture reveals that evil did not originate in God but in one of His created beings — Lucifer, the “shining one,” often associated with the anointed cherub described in Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14.

“You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty… You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness was found in you.” — Ezekiel 28:12, 15 (NASB)

Lucifer’s fall was not from ignorance but from pride. He sought equality with God rather than submission to Him: “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God… I will make myself like the Most High.’” — Isaiah 14:13–14 (NASB)

    📘 WORD BOX: LUCIFER

Meaning: From the Latin lux-ferre, “light bearer.”
Theological Note: Symbolic of the angel who fell from heaven through pride and became Satan, the adversary.
Key Texts: Isaiah 14; Ezekiel 28; Luke 10:18.

Wayne Grudem notes, “The fall of Satan demonstrates that even in a perfect environment, a created will can turn against its Creator.” Millard Erickson similarly describes Satan’s sin as “self-exaltation and insubordination — the desire to be independent of God.”
