Joseph: From the Pit to the Palace
“The LORD was with Joseph.” — Genesis 39:2
Joseph’s story is often summarized as one of perseverance and eventual success. While that is true, Scripture reveals something much deeper. His life illustrates how God patiently forms a leader long before entrusting that leader with influence. Every season of Joseph’s journey corresponds remarkably with the six movements of The Way Formation Leadership Framework.
Joseph did not become a great leader because he possessed extraordinary administrative ability alone. He became a trustworthy leader because God first transformed the person before enlarging the platform.
1. CALLING
God Initiates the Journey
Genesis 37
Joseph was only seventeen years old when God revealed His purposes through two remarkable dreams. In the first dream, bundles of grain bowed before his own bundle. In the second, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed before him. Although Joseph did not yet understand the meaning of these visions, they revealed that God had already begun directing the course of his life.
The dreams were not rewards for Joseph’s maturity.
They were invitations into God’s future.
His family, however, responded very differently. His brothers became increasingly jealous. His father treasured the dreams but questioned their meaning. What appeared to be the beginning of greatness quickly became the beginning of suffering.
Calling often introduces a destination long before revealing the path that leads there.
