Read the opening · The Letter Behind the Glass
“The handwriting looked like scratches made by a frightened spider.”
Amara Saunders leaned closer to the glass display case and tried to follow the faded brown lines across the old letter. The paper was yellow at the edges and folded into four uneven sections. A dark stain covered part of the upper corner, and a tear ran through several lines near the bottom.
Someone had written the letter more than three hundred years ago, but the ink still held the shape of the writer’s hand.
Amara imagined a feather quill scratching hurriedly across the page.
Whoever had written it had been afraid.
Or running out of time.
