Their Nature and Number
The Bible speaks of angels as innumerable (Hebrews 12:22). They are immortal and incorruptible (Luke 20:36) and do not marry (Matthew 22:30). Grudem notes: ‘Though distinct from God, angels share attributes such as intelligence, moral will, and spiritual power.’ Their power is delegated — they act only by divine permission (Psalm 103:20).
📘 WORD BOX: IMMORTALITY OF ANGELS
Meaning: They do not experience physical death.
Contrast: Humans die and await resurrection; angels remain in service or judgment.
Scripture: Luke 20:36; Hebrews 1:6–7.
Holy Angels vs. Fallen Angels
Of the original host, some remained loyal to God, while others followed Lucifer in rebellion (Revelation 12:4). The loyal angels are often called holy angels (Mark 8:38). They are distinguished not by nature but by obedience.
| Holy Angels | Fallen Angels (Demons) |
|---|---|
| Serve God’s will | Oppose God’s will |
| Ministers of life | Agents of destruction |
| Reflect God’s glory | Pervert God’s creation |
| Worship at the throne (Rev. 5:11–12) | Await final judgment (Matt. 25:41) |
This contrast reveals the moral capacity God gave to all intelligent creatures — the ability to choose allegiance.
