Lesson Five:
Flexibility Is Not Lowering Standards
The Lumina Foundation’s work with adult learners provides perhaps the most practical lesson of all.
Many students who stop attending college do not leave because they lack ability.
They leave because life becomes complicated.
Employment.
Family.
Transportation.
Childcare.
Finances.
Successful institutions do not lower expectations.
They remove unnecessary barriers.
This principle applies just as powerfully in K–12 education.
When schools become more flexible in communication, scheduling, family engagement, and support services, they often make excellence more attainable—not less.
A Challenge for Bahamian Education
Although these studies focus primarily on higher education, their implications extend well beyond universities.
Our schools should ask new questions.
Instead of asking:
“Why are students disengaged?”
Ask:
“What conditions have we created for engagement?”
Instead of asking:
“Why don’t parents participate?”
Ask:
“How accessible have we made participation?”
Instead of asking:
“Why are students failing?”
Ask:
“What supports are available before failure occurs?”
Leadership begins when questions change.
