There is comfort in that fellowship. Christ is not distant from pain; He entered it fully. Hebrews says we do not have a High Priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. He knows grief personally. He knows betrayal personally. He knows fear, exhaustion, tears, and suffering personally.
And because He suffered, He also knows how to sustain those who suffer.
Peter eventually learned this truth deeply. The disciple who once fled from suffering became a man who endured prison, persecution, and ultimately martyrdom because he had come to understand something life-changing:
The suffering of Christ always leads somewhere greater.
Beyond the cross came resurrection.
Beyond humiliation came glory.
Beyond suffering came victory.
And for believers, Peter says the same hope remains true. The pain may be real, but it is not final. The fire may refine, but it will not destroy those held by Christ.
To participate in Christ’s sufferings, then, is not merely to hurt. It is to walk so closely with Jesus that even pain becomes a place of fellowship with Him—and a pathway toward glory.
